It is easier for us to get to know God than to know our own soul [because] God is nearer to us than we are to ourselves… [God] is the ground in which (we) stand…[Therefore] if we want to know our own soul, and enjoy its fellowship, it is necessary to seek it in [the one who made us].
-Julian of Norwich
In God we move and breath. In God we are alive. The breath of our Maker sustains and supports all things by God’s powerful word. We are a sentence in the book of God’s story. Therefore, the life of God is more central to our own physical bodies than even our bodies themselves. At the core of every person is the sustaining breath of the Divine. Today’s prayer meditation is designed to help us attend to God’s faithful and constant presence in our bodies and in our lives. As you read through the following mediation I invite you to imagine God as the foundation for everything you know and experience.
All that I am exists in you
Oh God, my sustainer (Pause)
I observe my breath as it comes in and out
and I know that yours runs deeper
Into my lungs
Into my blood
Into my cells
You breath your life;
(Pause)
My heart groans and longs within me
To be fulfilled
Every thought
Every ache
Every hunger
Finds its origin in your designs;
(Pause)
I think on my future; each day a gift
How you deliver it faithfully
Every hour
Every minute
Every second
A word on your lips;
(Pause)
I consider the mystery of conciseness
my unique experience of personhood
Every sight
Every sound
Every sensation
A revelation of your love;
(Pause)
All that I will every be is held in your hand,
Oh God, my shield and my fortress
Amen
