Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
Revelation 3:20
Life itself knocks on our door, beckoning us to pause and let it in for a moment of union, and communion. The following exercise is designed to help us pay attention to those places where the spirit may be knocking on the door; both interior and exterior. Life may only be knocking at one of these doors so feel free to settle into the prompt that resonates with you. Under which prompt do you experience something? Go with that one and stay with it. Whatever you find, be patient and let the moment tell you when its over. It should be the feeling of fullness like when you’ve eaten just the right amount of food. Rest in the moment and when its over give thanks to God and remain attentive for the next invitation.
Say a centering prayer before proceeding
EXAMPLE:
This, here, now.
(Pause for breath)
Where do I sense a knock at the door of my attention?
(Pause for breath)
Where do I sense a knock at the door of my affections?
(Pause for breath)
Where do I sense a knock at the door of my worries?
(Pause for breath)
Where do I sense a presence? Behind? Beside? In front? Within?
(Pause for breath)
From whom do I sense a knock at the door of my spiritual journey?
(Pause for breath)
From what do I sense a knock at the door of my decisions?
(Pause for breath)
What is the physical posture which opens the door? Engage, consent, or rest?
(Pause for breath)
What are the words that answer the call? I breath them, whisper them, proclaim them.
(Pause for breath)
Sense the knock. Open the door. Answer the call.
(Pause for breath)
I will eat what is offered at this table and be filled.
(Pause for breath)
Thanks be to God
